VVVVVV - A Review

VVVVVV is a non-traditional puzzle platformer with an amazing chiptune soundtrack.  This game focuses on level design more than storytelling, so for those who are looking for a challenging platformer with interesting mechanics, I would recommend checking this game out.

The most distinguishing feature about VVVVVV is that you can't jump.  Jumping has always been associated with platformers, so it is interesting to see a platformer eliminate its most prominent aspect.  Instead, your only vertical navigation technique is controlling gravity.  You can toggle gravity only when your character is in contact with the floor (or ceiling).  Your character's horizontal movement is unimpeded though; you can freely move left or right while floating upwards or downwards.

Simple "jumps" must be circumvented due
to the nature of the gravity mechanic.
In VVVVVV, you play as Captain Viridian, trying to find your scattered crew.  There are several areas in the game, each with a specific theme in mind, all linked to the game's overworld.  This game is a challenging platformer.  There are checkpoints littered throughout the game, and there is very little delay between dying and spawning, so the turnover time between deaths is very short, allowing for many tries in a small amount of time.

Classic disappearing platforms.
For example, in one area, you are introduced to "flip strings", strings that will shift your gravity to the opposite from your current gravity.  Once introduced, the following screens add more "strings" and obstacles for you to utilize and avoid, respectively.  Each area follows this design pattern, each with a different "gimmick".

A combination of "flip strings" allows
for interesting progression.
The music in this game is very good.  This game offers a smaller repertoire than most other games, but all of the songs in this game are well done and catchy.  I love listening to the VVVVVV soundtrack whenever I am doing other non-game related things.

Another thing to note is that this game is a short game.  But being a short, hard game allows for fun challenges such as speed runs or no-death runs.

VVVVVV is a fun, challenging platformer that boasts interesting mechanics and a great chiptune soundtrack.  I would recommend this game for anyone who enjoys platformers since this game offers a fresh perspective on classic platformer games.

As always, thanks for reading!  Leave a comment or discuss below and share with your friends.
